Insurer offers home security tips for festive period

18 November 2008
A leading insurance company has today (November 18th) issued a host of tips on how to maintain a secure home over the Christmas period and to minimise its appeal to potential burglars.

The main pointer offered by esure is for homeowners to make sure their presents are not on view from outside if they are under the Christmas tree - a loft or cupboard which is not on the ground floor is preferable.

Furthermore, the company suggests that if you are leaving your property unattended, it may be worth using light timers or leaving the radio on to create the impression that it is occupied.

Disposing of the inevitable deluge of rubbish over the festive period has also been highlighted, with esure explaining that empty boxes sitting outside can advertise what people have been given as presents.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at the firm, said: "Christmas gifts that you have bought for friends and family as well as presents that you've received can add up to a hefty sum.

"Around this time of year thefts tend to be more targeted and the value of burglaries is higher than any other season."

Mr Pickard added that the usual home security tips such as locking all doors and windows are more important than ever over the Christmas period.

Esure was founded in 2000 and offers insurance across a range of areas, such as cars, vans, homes and pets.ADNFCR-1051-ID-18883019-ADNFCR
